Long Term Care

Since May 2003, As Good as Gold has rescued over 1,300 Golden Retrievers. At any given time, we have 30-35 dogs, males and females, from six months to upwards of 14 years of age; being cared for in the private homes of foster volunteers.

Sometimes Goldens come to us with issues that can keep them from being adoptable. Some are quite old and have very slim chances of adoption, and some have medical issues that may interfere with their adoption possibilities. Some have medical issues that are terminal.

As Good as Gold believes that every dog should have the chance to be comfortable and happy and should get the medical care they deserve, even if that means they stay as part of the AGaG family for the rest of their days. We developed the Long Term Care program so that these dogs could have all of those things. While dogs are in Long Term Care, As Good as Gold covers all medical expenses.

Below are our current Long Term Care dogs. These dogs are not available for adoption, however please click on their picture if you'd like to make a donation towards As Good as Gold's veterinary expenses.

Connor

Hi all – it’s Connor.  I may not look like a dog who needs long-term care but everyone says I’m virtually unadoptable because I have epilepsy.  I’m a youthful seven-year old who likes to go for walks, swim at the dog beach, and snuggle with my foster family.  I’m good about taking my medications but, occasionally, they aren’t strong enough to stop my seizures.  My foster mom and dad don’t mind taking me to the emergency clinic when I have seizures…even though they usually happen in the very early morning hours.

My foster mom and dad are great – they make sure I eat well, exercise regularly, and get plenty of love.  I’m such a big part of their family that when they recently got married – I was their ring bearer!  I’m so lucky As Good as Gold is taking care of me and that I have an excellent quality of life.  If you’d like to make a donation towards my medical expenses, please click on my photo!

Honey

On a 2008 trip to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, UT, several members of the AGaG board of directors met Honey – an extremely shy dog who found human interaction frightening. Believing that one-on-one care in an extremely compassionate foster home would help Honey over her fear of humans, AGaG arranged for her transfer to Illinois.

Thanks to her amazing foster family, Honey has blossomed.  Once fearful of going through doorways, she now runs through them to keep up with her foster siblings.  Her golden sister Percy has “shown her the ropes” about living in a home, riding in cars, and frolicking in the lake.  Most people don’t consider Honey an adoptable dog so she’ll spend the rest of her life surrounded by people who love her and have her best interests at heart.  If you’d like to make a donation towards Honey’s medical expenses, please click on her photo.
